Bestiarius
Bestiarius means "beast fighter" and these gladiators were pitted against wild and sometimes exotic animals. There are actually two kinds of bestiarii; the first type were groups of condemned criminals or enemies of the empire that were thrown unarmed en masse into the arena to be killed by a single starving animal. Even if they managed to kill the beast another would be released until everyone was dead.
The second type is a true bestiarius who was specifically trained to fight certain types of beasts. They were armed with a spear or dagger and little else, but not much is known about their exact equipment or how one trained for this specialized role. It is suggested that a bestiarius specialized against certain types of animals and the way they fight rather than being able to fight all types of beasts.
Sadly there is very little historical evidence to draw from and many unanswered questions remain about the Bestiarii.
