---------------------------------
Unfortunately, Sunken Temple has a lot of prep work, and you have to go all over the damn world. If you're lucky, you did the Brohann Caskbelly parts at level 43 instead of reading this guide at level 54 and having to go back and do it. You're probably not lucky, so let's get started. Just a note, I am assuming that you already have The God Hakkar in your quest log from doing stuff in Zul'Farrak. If you don't, then you can read my Zul'Farrak instance guide to get up to speed.
Start in Stormwind at the inn in the Dwarven District. Do the following quests: In Search of the Temple -> To the Hinterlands -> Gryphon Master Talonaxe -> Rhapsody Shindigger -> and pick up Rhapsody's Kalimdor Cocktail.
Now go to Un'goro Crater and do Muigin and Larion and pick up A Visit to Gregan. Go to Feathermoon Stronghold in Feralas and pick up The Sunken Temple. While you are in Feralas, talk to Gregan and kill the creatures you need for your Kalimdor Cocktail. Go to Tanaris and talk with Marvon Rivetseeker. Sometime before you do Sunken Temple, you need to go to Ratchet and pick up the Stone Circle and come back. You should complete the following quests before you are ready to go to Sunken Temple:
In Search of the Temple
To the Hinterlands
Gryphon Master Talonaxe
Rhapsody Shindigger
Rhapsody's Kalimdor Cocktail
Rhapsody's Tale
The Sunken Temple
The Stone Circle
Muigin and Larion
A Visit to Gregan
and you should have the following quests in your quest log:
The God Hakkar
Haze of Evil
Into the Depths
Into the Temple of Atal'Hakkar
Jammal'an the Prophet
Now you are ready to go to Swamp of Sorrows (technically for the 2nd time) and enter the instance. The portion outside the instance portal is fairly linear, so just keep going and if there's a fork in the road just trust me that you'll still get to where you want to go no matter which path you take. It's a very confusing instance because it is multilayered, so I'll try to explain it as best I can but most likely you will be better off hugging the right wall and doing everything as you go. If you've ever done mazes as a kid you should know that hugging the right wall will always get you to the exit.
However, if you're feeling adventurous, check out this map and I'll try to explain where you should go to complete all the quests. Start by going "mid right" according to the map and find the lower balcony. You should be on a ring with 6 paths that go inside the ring. Each path inside should have a big green snake that mouses over to the gear icon. This is the Stone Circle. You have to click on the green snakes in the correct order to unlock the puzzle. If you click on the wrong snake, you get poisoned, but it's not a big deal. The correct order is:
South
North
SouthWest
SouthEast
NorthWest
NorthEast
Once you click them all, you need to jump down into the safest spot possible, and clear your way to the Altar of Hakkar by the stairs. Click on the Altar to complete the Into the Depths quest and get the followup, Secret of the Circle. There is a guardian in the central pool, you have to kill him to complete the next part. He has a ridiculous knockback that knocks you so high you can die from the fall. Have only the main tank get in melee range and have everyone else stay back. Otherwise he is not terribly difficult. Click on the statue in the center of the pool to claim your reward.
Now go back to the instance portal entrance by going up the stairs (the only path available to you since you jumped down from the lower balcony). You want to get to the Upper Balcony, so take the "mid left" path according to the above map. You will be on another ring with inward paths. Each inward path leads to a named troll guardian. You need to kill all 6 of them for the Jammal'an the Prophet quest. Once you kill them, you can proceed to the "ground floor" which is the left path from the instance portal.
Here is where you meet several dozen dragonkin in packs of 6-10. You will need to have a good mage and a good healer to clear out these packs. I have been told that you need to kill every dragonkin on this floor, and I have never questioned it. So go ahead and kill everything unless you're feeling gutsy and don't want to.
To the east is Jammal'an the Prophet. If you killed all the trolls on the upper balcony, the giant green shield will be down and you can fight him. If you haven't killed them, then that area is inaccessible. The undead trolls have an ability when they die, a wraith/spectre spawns and attacks you. Ignore the spectre, it despawns on its own. Just stay out of melee range. Jammal'an is nothing special. You need to kill Jammal'an before you can kill Eranikus. (thanks, Woadun)
The south part of this room leads to Eranikus. First you need to kill some elite green dragons named Morphaz and Hazzas. They shouldn't be much trouble. Eranikus hits very hard, but it otherwise not difficult. When you kill him, loot his Essence and then click on the altar in the same room as him to get the Chained Essence of Eranikus. There is a follow-up to this quest, but it is broken, so keep the trinket if you're going to use it.
To the west is Hakkar. This is the only really difficult fight in the dungeon because if you are not prepared for the encounter, you will wipe and you only get 1 shot at the boss per instance run. I'll give the high level description, then another more detailed description. Basically, Hakkar is a spirit that has yet to be summoned. There are 4 braziers that need to be activated before he appears. The elite monsters drop torches that you use on the braziers, and after all 4 are lit then you can kill Hakkar.
Now what makes this difficult is the endless amount of additional monsters that spawn. Killing them all has no effect on spawn rates or anything, so there's really one easiest way to do this room. Have everyone stand in one corner, as close to the brazier as possible. One person goes and pulls the elite and however many non-elites come with it. AE the non-elites and kill the elites. Loot the torch and use it on the brazier. At this point, an elite dragonkin suppressor will walk in and try and stop you. Go ahead and pull that guy and kill him. Now the entire party needs to move into the next corner and repeat the process. If you're lucky the casters can find a moment to stay out of combat and drink. By staying in the very corner each time, you aggro the minimum number of non-elite monsters and have more opportunities to drink. Hakkar himself is nothing special, the hard part is surviving the 15 minute fight to spawn him.
If you fail (and you may very well fail if it's your first time) then you need to reset the instance and clear all the green dragonkin again. You don't have to go to the upper or lower balcony or do any of the other stuff. Actually Sunken Temple boss runs are fairly quick.
After you're all done don't forget to go to Itharius' cave in Swamp of Sorrow with the Essence of Eranikus to continue that quest line. (unless you want to keep the trinket)
